After the close of the holiday season, people often feel the urge to get back on track with multiple goals — especially their health. The real key to success with new health goals is not about specific resolutions, per se, but your mental attitude; your willingness to welcome change paired with the desire to make it happen.

Simple Tips that Get Results

If you’ve decided that now is the time to get back on track with an exercise routine, create health goals that are realistic physically, but also include a built-in level of compassion. That means making sure goals are a bit of a challenge, but not so hard or beyond your current capabilities that you torture yourself to reach them.

As you plan your goals, it’s also important to check in with how you feel about your current body image. Both men and women choose to “up the game” with their health because of the emotional response they have to how their body looks physically. This often leads to making hasty, forced goals in response to personal disappointment in physical appearance. As a result, health goals are based on negative thinking, rather than the inspiration for better overall health.

Be willing to accept yourself where you are at as a statement of fact. Then develop goals and strategies that move you forward with an honest and realistic frame of mind.

Remember not to judge yourself, beat yourself up or make yourself wrong. Take time and patience to build a new way of living day-by-day that is not only achievable, but enjoyable! If you make things too hard, you’ll just give up or injure yourself before you even really get started.

So, where to start? Consider the cornerstones of successful health strategies.

Is what you are doing measurable?

Are the strategies and goals something you can take action on immediately?

Do your goals and strategies include things you can realistically accomplish (leaving specific time frames out of the equation)?

Is it possible to scale things down or modify if challenges arise?

Are you committed to making health changes part of your life routine?

By starting with these core areas, you will create clear, simple goals that match your specific needs and sustainable for the long-term. Just remember, pushing hard from day one does not bring the desired results faster, and can often lead to injury. Check out our next post on injury and pain management, and how to be mindful of your spine as part of your overall health plan.

I want you to know that you hold the greatest gifts within you! As we begin our New Year and use our own commitment and will power (or endurance) we are strengthening our life resources and getting closer to the goals that our in our hearts. Every time you follow through and complete even the littlest thing you are getting stronger, healthier, and closer to your goals. If at night you tell yourself you are going to start getting up early, then make sure you get up early. Every time you listen to those inner clues that guide you to your goals you get stronger. By listening to yourself and following through you create trust in yourself.

The Next Evolved Step in a Healing Revolution

Our previous blog post highlighted the key differences between restorative and reorganizational healing, and demonstrated how they each had their place for different reasons. As we continue to move forward in the holistic care movement as a community and a planet, I think it’s important to delve a bit deeper into reorganizational healing to explore it’s power in more detail. Here’s a quick refresh definition; reorganizational healing picks up where “strictly structural” restorative healing leaves off. Reorganizational healing focuses on a holistic approach to health, including prevention, and leads a person to seek meaning in an injury in order to use it as a tool for growth. It draws connections between medical issues, symptoms and possible causes, and takes into account outdated thought patterns and beliefs that may be causing road blocks physically. For example, many people have chronic lower back pain throughout their lives, despite careful exercise and regular chiropractic visits. When slipped discs and other more serious issues such as posture and injury have been ruled out, the last element left to consider is the emotional component. Perhaps the person does not “feel supported” by friends of family members, or has fears about lack and survival needs, often directly related to limited financial resources. From a structural standpoint, the bio-mechanical properties of the low back provide foundational support for the movements of the entire spine. The lower back also holds energetic properties that provide a feeling of being grounded supported and having our primal needs met. So, chronic back pain may really be related to a fear about financial support and lack of overall emotional support from friends, family or coworkers.

It’s unresolved emotional states that lead to physical symptoms that can become chronic, and truly impact our quality of life. It’s also why reorganizational healing is so important — it gives us the tools we need to re-frame ideas, thoughts and feelings in context of our physical health and tie them to specific symptoms. That way we can pull the mind, body and spirit together for collaborative, full, holistic healing. Who doesn’t want to be empowered and truly understand their own body?

The real key to the effectiveness of reorganizational healing is the willingness to open to change. This is especially important when dealing with chronic injuries or pain. Often times people are searching for a medical reason as a cause for these issues, when it’s actually an emotional issue at the root of it all. Or, they opt for restorative surgeries that do not address the true need to reorganize and shift perspective, so the pain persists.

If you’ve been dealing with chronic issues that don’t seem to have a logical cause, or are seeing very limited progress in your current treatment, consider the holistic approach of reorganizational healing. Not only will it address your pain points, it will get you to the next level of more dynamic, long-lasting health and well-being.

Tip of the week: Feeling stiff and tired during the work day? In addition to taking breaks and walking away from the computer at least every 30 minutes, be sure to exercise your eyes. Take them off the computer screen, and look up and down, to all corners of the room and roll them around — without moving your head. Also be sure to take a look into the distance if you can out the window, changing your perspective and focus. It will help open up your mind, body and spirit.

Shifting the Healing Model: Restorative vs Reorganizational Healing

When you are in pain, recovering from an injury or struggling to maintain your health, you are focused on just feeling better. But how often do you think of the best way to approach healing the body?

The current medical model in the United States is restorative, based and focused on treating disease in a way that returns people to their prior level of health. The idea behind restorative healing is pain relief; “fixing” and restoring the body to a place of functionality close to or similar to before an injury or illness. This is a very necessary step for broken bones, accidents or times when it’s needed to save a life. It has its value and its place.

However, this approach doesn’t do much for expanding the ability of the body, giving it room to grow into a new dimension of health and well-being long-term. And as we have seen in the last 10 years or more, focusing solely on a restorative approach just doesn’t work anymore.

The former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), estimates that, of the annual medical budget in the United States (i.e., $2.4 trillion in 2008), the overwhelming majority goes toward treatment of ill patients, and less than 5% goes toward keeping Americans healthy, according to a recent editorial written by Robert H.I. Blanks, Ph.D called, Regoranizational Healing: A Health Model Whose Time Has Come.

It’s time to provide people with the knowledge and tools to put their health back into their own hands.

So what needs to be done? People need to be aware of and open to a new health paradigm. A more expanded vision for health care is reorganizational healing, and picks up where restorative healing leaves off. It focuses on a holistic approach to health, prevention, and empowering a person to seek meaning in an injury and use it as a tool for growth. This is vastly different from a restorative model that often places blame around long-term sickness and injury, which is very detrimental to the overall healing process.

The reorganizational model is also based on the connections between medical issues, symptoms and causes, and is very focused on prevention. This approach to healing is more comprehensive because it takes into account the mind and body as part of the healing process, and how outdated thought patterns and beliefs may be causing road blocks physically. It’s especially helpful when faced with recurring symptoms that don’t seem to subside after consistent treatment.

Most importantly, a reorganizational approach to healing invites us to look at our every day living habits and gives us the chance to examine if we are giving ourselves the level of self-care we truly need – without feeling guilty about it. The power gets shifted away from focusing on what’s wrong, and puts it towards making healthy preventative choices we can feel good about, helping us change behavior.

So, are you ready to embrace reorganizational healing?

Post your thoughts below in the comments or on our Facebook Page. We’d love to hear from you!

Hello this is Dr. Simon Dove from the Chiropractic Wellness Center in Fort Collins, CO. Today on my video blog, I’d like to talk about what NSA is. That stands for Network Spinal Analysis, and it’s one of many chiropractic techniques. Over 100 techniques exist in chiropractic, and this is just one. I believe it to be one of the best, if not the best.

What makes NSA great is that the way we remove tension in a body is in a way that helps the nervous system learn how to do it itself. Now, what do I mean by that? I certainly don’t mean that soon you’ll be cranking your neck, popping your neck, and “doing it yourself.” On the contrary, what I mean is that we’re going to get certain parts of your brain to become more aware of how you hold tension and where you hold tension, and by doing so, then the brain will start to take over and take care or manage that tension. So that when tension comes in, you’re able to release it yourself.

It reminds me of that old adage, “You can teach a man to fish and feed them for their life, or you can give a man a fish but only feed them once.”

What’s occurring is a skill develops in the nervous system, and the person is able to identify and feel tension — physical, emotional, or mental tension — any time of tension in the body. The brain begins to identify with it and learns what to do with it. Release it, change it — whatever it needs to do.

So that’s the real benefit of Network Spinal Analysis (NSA). If you have any questions, feel free to call me at (970) 224-5006, and join me on Facebook.

So many things contribute to a happy life; fantastic friends, loving family, a fulfilling career, art, music, nature — the list is endless. Now take a step back and think…“without good health, would these things be nearly as amazing?”

If you were really honest with yourself, you know the answer is no.

That’s why nurturing your body in a consistent, healthy way is the most important commitment you will ever make. It’s how you are able to show up as the best and healthiest version of yourself, and be present for others to share your joy, talents and awesomeness.

Most importantly, dedication to nourishing yourself contributes to disease prevention and a longer, higher quality life, no matter what the state of your health may be right now. With focus and consistency, you can bring your body from a defensive stance into a place of balance and safety, and then to a stage of growth and improved health.

So if you’re ready to commit to yourself through better health, here are simple ways to get started:

Drink more water. Throughout the day drink 2.2-3 litres of water to flush out the system and stay hydrated, especially in a normal climate. Cells need water to operate efficiently and keeping them happy leads to a healthy body. The exact amount perfect for you will be based on your age, activity level, health, and climate.

Start doing things that support you in your committed new direction. It’s a very good idea to start adding or changing small things whether it’s a behavior, thought process, or an activity to support you in reaching your goal for better health. For example, if you want to relieve the cycle of chronic pain, one of your “small things” might be to drink more water everyday, as there is a strong correlation between pain and dehydration.

Invite your brain to join in and listen. Feeling guilty, frustrated and overwhelmed can happen when trying to get back on track with your health. Take notice. The most critical piece in committing to better health is to find ways to get your brain on board and really feel what’s behind those road blocks. A simple way to work through a block is by taking deep breaths as you “listen” and feel into what your brain is noticing.

Set yourself up to win. Have health check-in buddies and dedicated health practitioners in place to help with problem areas and overall momentum. Leave room for a little celebration when you’ve reached a goal.

Begin a regular exercise routine. Start one today. It could be simple as walking daily. The trick is not how much you do at one time, but how consistently you follow through.

The most important thing to remember — no symptoms does not equal good health. Give yourself the most valuable gift possible this holiday season and find a way to be the best, healthiest version of you, starting with these simple steps.

Meals loaded with fats and hard-to-digest proteins tend to slow you down… a little NON-vitality’! Foods high in fiber, minerals, vitamins, and water will feed your blood, body, and attitude! All these will aid in creating energy in your body. This good nutrition lets you get through your daily tasks, with energy to spare for exercise, fun, or play! It is recommended to eat more fish, low-fat dairy foods, whole grains, fruits and vegetables. “An apple a day….

Hello, this Dr. Simon Dove of the Chiropractic Wellness Center in Fort Collins, CO. I'm here introducing a video blog series that I'm going to be giving. This series is designed to give you helpful tips to live and stay healthy. You may learn something new, and for sure we're going to have fun!
If there's anything that you particularly want me to address or talk about that you feel you need or our community needs, contact me at info@myfortcollinschiropractor.com, and I'll see if I can work that into the series itself.
Before we close, I'll share with you one of my favorite tips for when I'm coaching someone on creating change.
Health Tip: Start Something New
It's much better to start something new than to stop or get rid of something. For example, if someone were going to change their diet, I would not say, "don't eat potato chips," if they were eating potato chips. Rather, I would say, "Increase your water intake." The reason is that we've found that as a person starts something new and they begin to feel the positive effects, they get excited about that and they keep going with it. That's my tip for today, and I look forward to seeing you! Take care.
Chiropractic Wellness Center of Fort Collins is lead by Dr. Simon Dove, a chiropractor with over a decade of professional experience performing Network Spinal Analysis, a gentle form of chiropractic used to treat people with back pain, neck pain, and other ailments. NSA is designed to advance spinal and neural integrity by developing new strategies and self-organization; it is about living life from the inside out. Through a series of light touches along the spine, the practice member experiences a deeper awareness of their own spinal structures and a release of spinal tensions.

As stress is removed from our body and mind the immune system is able to operate in a more optimal state. This freedom and improved function extends to the cardiovascular, digestive and musculoskeletal systems. When one removes this stress, according to the National Health Information Center, they will experience the ability to maintain high energy levels, a positive outlook, and avoid sickness and injury. Those interested in deepening their stress reduction levels can find greater success by incorporating meditation, physical activity, massage, and social interactions.

Many of us were told as kids that the brain stops growing, so…. “You better be good to it!” The scientists and doctors claiming this to be true, were half right so to speak. Yes they do behave (grow) differently than other cells in the body, but what we know now to be true is that the brain cells do in fact keep growing. We should definitely care how we treat our brain, and it is good to know that the neurons (basic brain cells) continue to grow throughout our lives. This adds a whole new dimension to how the health and function of a brain affects an individual’s health and wellness in the presence of disease.
